I am going to be starting my first 4th Edition D&D campaign soon.

I have called it 'A Darkening of the Soul'.

I will be starting the players from scratch at 1st level and the campaign should take them up to about 6th level.

I will post up here a review of each sessions game (we play Mondays).

The campaign is located in the new Forgotten Realms world and they will start in the new kingdom of Akunul in the south.

Should be fun, I hope so anyway.

Hi Ricky, I hope to start back some point soon. Will let you know when as soon as I can. Is there a character type that you don't have or will need. If so, let me know.

Genasi would fit in with the area as the campaign is based in Akanul.

If you want to play a Genasi I have some info if you need it.

However, for game balance a mage would be most useful, but it is up to you.

Hi Rick, I will play a human mage. How are you doing the character stats? Are you using the points system or rolling dice?

We are using the computer Character Builder.

If you want to use some other method that is no problem.

Hi Ricky, I have created a character but only have access to the beta version. Is there a big differance between the 2 or does it not matter as much. He is a human wizard. If you want to see him, I can drop off a shortened version with Chris for you to see.

The beta version is what we have been using.

Don't worry just bring it along on the 10th.

We won't really get started until then.

For your info our Victoriana game is taking a little longer to finish then anticipated.

We haven't quite finished yet and will still be playing it on the 10th May, you are welcome of course but it won't be D&D that night.

Sorry

We played our first Game session last Monday.

Because I am starting the players at 1st Level I had to come up with a starting scenario.

So I chose to make them all 0 Level and around 18 yrs old. I placed them as sons and daughters of Farmers, Farriers, Taylors, old Soldiers, Millers and Tin Miners. I set their little town, called Oakwood, on the West coast of Akanul. Most of the population of Akanul is Genasi but I set the players as remnants of the original people and most were human.

To get them all up to 1st level I had my main NPC, called Chalice a female Tiefling, visit their parents and offer them 100 gold if they would allow her to take them and train them for 6 months. She also promised that if the player graduated that they would return to visit home and that she would pay them an extra 100 gold.

As all were very poor they agreed, so I had Chalice take all the players for training. I used The White Lotus Academy as a base for my training school. They of course all duly graduated and became full members of the academy and were given their wooden pendant with a White Lotus flower on one side and a blue C with white arrow on the back.

Now at 1st level they were sent by the academy on their first mission. On the way they were to visit home and give their parents the 100 gold as promised. Before they got there they came across some Kolbolds who had attacked a merchant caravan and were torturing two of the merchants.

Chalice who is a 5th Level Warlord organised the players into an attack group, she set the Ranger (Matt) as covering archer, the Monk (Mark) and the Wizard (Jez) attacked up the right flank moving stealthily through rocky ground, The rest, the Fighter (Richard), the Cleric (Laurence), the Sorcerer (Linda) and Chalice attacked from the left flank, approaching behind some trees.

They attacked by surprise with magic spells going in first followed by the hand to hand players rushing in. Although there were about ten Kobolds with Pikemen, a Hurler and Minions the players fairly easily overran them. One Kobold fled but was cut down by an arrow from the Ranger. One Kobold Pikeman surrendered but Chalice ordered the Fighter to kill it, which he did with some help from the Monk.

One Merchant had died but they healed and saved the other. When he had recovered he relayed how they had been ambushed by the Kobolds with some Hobgoblins. The Hobgoblins had captured four of the Merchants guards and marched them away in chains. The Hobgoblins had not wanted the merchants themselves so the Kobolds were having some fun torturing them to death.

The players realising they were only 5 miles from Oakwood got concerned about this type of attack, which they had not known to have happened before. So the Monk with the Ranger were sent off to the Rangers family farm, which was nearby to check on his parents and brothers and sister. Here they found the farm burnt down, probably days before, the Rangers brothers and sister were missing but there were two graves with wooden markers, these had his mother and fathers names on and he realised they were dead.

In anguish the Ranger rushed back to the group to tell them the awful news. The Monk fearing for his own parents and sister ran off to his parents mining hut. Here he found his father hanged and his mother and sister missing. The Monk is the brother of the Sorcerer and after giving his father a proper cremation rushed back to stop his sister seeing the terrible atrocity.

By now the rest of the players had entered Oakwood, much of the town had been burnt down but they found the body of the Cleric’s father, the Farrier, nailed to his workshop door, he had been used as target practise. The arrows were identified by Chalice as Goblin arrows. Searching the town they found one survivor, an old man who had hid, he told them that the town had suddenly been attacked by many Goblins, the Farrier had killed three before being overpowered and nailed to the door. Most of the townsfolk had been captured put in chains and marched north.

When the Monk arrived in town he was severely chastised by Chalice for going off on his own, she informed him that no one is ever to go on their own, she tells him we are family and we always stick together and never go alone or leave another behind.

With the players feeling sad and very angry the session ends as they plot revenge.
