Now that I have finished some of the figure painting I wanted to catch up on I thought I would get back to some terrain making.
I am going to have a go at making Meduseld, the Rohirrim Golden Hall.
This is quite a big project, not as big as the one on Minas Tirith, but certainly bigger then the Corsair ship.
I am planning quite a large piece with a base of around 700mm by 525mm.
the actual footprint of the hall will be around 400mm by 275mm. so quite big.
The first thing I have to do is get the materials together, I have already done the research.
I am going to need quite a lot of extruded polystyrene board for the base and hall platform/foundation, then a load of balsa wood and of course teddy bear fur for the thatch.
I will post up some pics as I go along.

I have completed the basic walls of the great hall in foam.

The next thing to do is to cut out some balsa wood planks and stick them on the walls, in a similar way to the Corsair ship.

As always, your work is superb and it's great watching the sheets of extruded polystyrene turn into some great looking terrain

Thx DGC
Nice to see you back on.
Yep the foam is a brill material to work with, so easy to cut and shape.
This project is a favorite of mine and I am really enjoying making it.

I have finally, finally clad the walls in balsa planks both inside and out. This so I can detail the interior and have a removable roof.
Here are some pics of the clad walls. The next thing to do is put the details on the walls.

I have also started making some of the internal furnishings. Tables and benches and the tripod braziers.

I have added the detail to the outside of the walls, here are some pics:

I have also finished making the internal furnishings etc.

The next stage is to detail the inside of the walls.

I'm taking a break from building Meduseld. I find I need a break after a while as I start to lose focus, so I do something completely different.
No one wanted an army painted so at the minute I am painting up a 1:48 scale A-1H Skyraider Tamiya model plane for Richard (Jez's brother).
At the moment I am struggling with the airbrush painting of the green and brown camouflage pattern! Nightmare!! I have mentioned it before but painting all those flat panels on a plane or tank etc just has to be done by airbrush.
But anyone who has used one will know just how awkward they are to use properly, if I get this wrong the finish will look all blotchy, pants really!
Not easy. When I have finished it I will post up a few pics.

I haven't forgotten this post.
I am still painting the plane.
Unfortunately as Jez said during last nights D&D game I am too much of a perfectionist.
I can't just stick a couple of coats on the model and say that's it finished.
Never mind another couple of weeks should see it completed.

Hey. I never knew they had these in Middleearth - good job the Orcs never found them
Great looking plane and as always, the attention to detail is awesome. I can understand doing something different for a break (hence the wood thing I did), it can help focus yourself again, re-kindle the interest etc.
Should I asume that you used an airbrush?? If not, then the free-hand is superb, even if you did then still a great finish.
You have mentioned previously about the problems painting large areas of flat panels. I know the drybrushing really isn't the way forward (especially on something modern) where the aim is to recreate a beleivable finished item and I don't think you have 'blended' the paint so what did you do to get the finish, any tips/tricks??
Back to Meduseld. What's next?? The whole project is coming along nicely.

I have used an airbrush. The problem I have is I have not had much practice with it. I had to use it as it is the only way to get a good smooth finish on the smooth flat areas.
I had problems blending in between colours as my inexperience resulted in many little spots instead of a fine fading of colour at the boundary. I tried blending these spots down with a thin wash, but in the end left it.
The main feature you have to bring out on planes is the panel lines. To do this I carefully applied a thin wash of Bestial Brown to all lines and around projections. This actually looked quite bad when finished, but I then drybrushed/overbrushed the areas with the base colour to just leave the brown in the the line, this worked okay. Then gave it another fine drybrush with the base colour lightened with Bleached Bone.
Then I applied darker washes and abrasion damage as I would any piece. With the black engine exhaust I should have used an airbrush, but because of lack of practice I used a wash.
One of the things that actually took the longest time was getting the transfers right. You are supposed to applt Johnson Klear onto the base paint, this is a floor polish! This helps them stick apparently, I didn't have any so used Tamiya decalfix. This is a gloss finish so the transfers stick to it, then i went over it again with Decalfix. as it is gloss I then had to spray the whole plane clear matt.
But the end result is not too bad so It seemed okay.

I have now finished detailing the inside of the great hall, here are a few pics.

The next thing to do is to start making the roof trusses and support columns for the roof.

I have finished making the columns and roof trusses, at this point they are not permanently fixed so that I can paint the interior.
The actual roof trusses will be fixed to the underside of the actual removable roof to allow access into the model when the roof is off.
Here are some pics.

The next step is to make the actual roof. To do this I am going to stick balsa planks across the roof.
